Printable Version Ask Billy Mira, August 2006

You've heard his dead-on impressions of David Lee Roth and Ozzy Osbourne on Howard Stern and SNL alumni Jim Breuer's Jim Breuer Unleashed on Sirius Satelite Radio. Comedian Billy Mira answers your questions about working the professional comedy circuit.

Working Performer:
For someone in standup who has moderate experience in local/regional clubs, what is the best way to move beyond that into other markets and persue it full-time?

Billy Mira: Get ready to make a lot of sacrifice and connections. There are two ways you could approach this. You make friends with a touring headling comic who likes your act and refers you to a club which he already performs at. Or focus in on the club you wanna play, send them a tape, or show up an open mic night and kill! If all else fails go back to school cause you dont wanna hear the next alternative (trust me)!

Working Performer:
Do you recommend dealing with clubs directly or through an agent?

Billy Mira: If you have an agent that is actually working for you, then go through an agent. Agents are good when the guy actually works for his money and his title! Remember an agent needs you to make money, find an agent who believes in YOU, not some guy you want around who blows up your ego with all filler and no killer instinct, if you have the right agent its a blessing, if you dont its a waste, go develop relationships on your own if you have no agent, there is nothing wrong with that, lots of guys have canned the agent cause they have developed relationships on theyre own. This also depends on the comics personalty and the level of success. All in all, in the beginning it is good to do it yourself, its also help you learn the business, so when you do get an agent you'll know its a good one.
